Died November 15, 2003 at his residence. Tom was born April 9, 1930 in Kalamazoo the son of Joseph and Margaret (Feeney) Carey. He was a graduate of St. Augustine High School, Western Michigan University, and received his law degree from the University of Michigan. He was the senior partner of the law firm Carey, Kirk, Emmons and Kihm retiring in December of 2002. He was a member of the Michigan Bar Association, Kalamazoo County Bar Association, and the RABA. Tom was a veteran serving in the US Army and was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus # 1616, 3rd and 4th Degree. He was an avid trout fisherman and a life member of Trout Unlimited. In July of 1964, Tom traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to provide legal assistance in civil rights cases. He was preceded in death by his parents and good friend, Mort Fisher. On June 23, 1956 in St. Edward’s Church, Little Rock, Arkansas Tom was united in marriage to Mary Ann (Cumnock) Carey, who survives. Also surviving are six children: David Carey of Kalamazoo, Ann (Mark) Bayer of Conesus, NY, Susan Carey of Kalamazoo, Jane (Tracy) Kiel of Kalamazoo, Ruth (Tom) Shehigian of Marshall, and Martha Carey of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren; a brother, Philip (Joanie) Carey of Kalamazoo; numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation will take place with private interment at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may spend time with the family Friday, Nov. 28 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM at the BETZLER FUNERAL HOMES Stadium Drive, West of US 131 375-2900 where a Scripture Service will be held that evening at 7:30 PM, followed by a time for remembering. A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 29 - 11:00 AM at St. Monica Catholic Church, Rev. Larry Farrell, Celebrant.
