Life Story / Obituary
Melba Jane (Conrad) Guy, age 88, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton, MI. She was born a twin on May 30, 1930 near Coffeville, Kansas to Wade and Rosetta Conrad. In 1948 she graduated high school from Enterprise Academy, a Seventh Day Adventist parochial school in Herrington, Kansas. She met the future ordained Pastor, GH Guy, at EA that year. Married a year later, the high school sweethearts built a precious partnership of 68 years. Together they served the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Minnesota, California, New Mexico, Texas, New Jersey, Kansas, and Peru, South America.
In 1968 Jane fulfilled a lifelong dream when she graduated with a RN degree from Loma Linda University Nursing School, Loma Linda, CA. She aced those California Nursing Boards! She loved all the dimensions of nursing. Announcing that she was an RN was as significant an identifier as telling you her name.
Jane and Herman were the dedicated parents of Jan (John) Steffen, Jon Guy, and Jim Guy. Jane was a natural at lovingly parenting her children who do indeed stand up and proclaim her blessed. (Proverbs 31:28)
She is predeceased by her husband, Herman Guy; a sister, Helen McGinnis; brothers, Marshal and Milton Conrad; and grandson, Brady Guy. She is survived by 4 sisters: Jean Hein, Lucille Heiser, Frances Bouman, and Becky LeMere; and 2 brothers: Delbert and Leon Conrad.
As the eldest of 10 children, Jane was a natural leader in most settings. Her style was never presumptive or arrogant. She led with cheerful kindness, excellence, and a ferocious personal work ethic.
Jane powered through many health challenges her entire life, but the genetic streak of familiar Alzheimer’s Dementia proved a daunting foe.
Jane is also survived by her 7 beloved grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, buckets of cousins, and many nieces and nephews all over the United States.
A joint memorial service for Jane and Herman, who passed away in April 2018, is planned for this summer. Arrangements by Betzler & Thompson Life Story Funeral Home, 60900 M-40, Lawton, (269) 657-3870.
