Life Story / Obituary

Richard “Dick” Wayne Hertzell passed away on October 28, 2021 after a brief illness.

A man of few words, Richard was an honorable man dedicated to God, country and family. Many will remember him for his orange hat and winning smile. A graduate of Gobles High School and Western Michigan University, Richard served in the Korean War and spent many a night pouring over columnar spreadsheets during his 36-year career with The Upjohn Company.

Retirement did not find Richard resting on his laurels. He delivered prescriptions for Oakwood Pharmacy, worked at Wedel’s Garden Center, and served on various committees for Oshtemo Township, including the search committee for a new Fire Chief and the Capital Improvements Committee. He enjoyed working in his yard, taking walks, riding his bike, chatting with neighbors in the driveway, family celebrations and dining out always engaging in conversation with the servers. Richard attended Calvary Bible Church where he was especially fond of Pastors Tiberius Rata and John Munro.

Most recently, Richard’s primary focus was to care for his wife of 31 years, Justine, who survives. Also surviving are daughter, Terri Hertzell; son, Kent (Didi) Hertzell; grandchildren, Alison (Brendan) Lowry, Tiffany Hertzell and Derek Hertzell; great grandchildren, Edith “E-D” Lowry and Aleksander “Xander” Lowry; former wife and mother of his children, Marlene (Marv) VanTuyl; and Justine’s daughter, Tina Marie Padron.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and cremains will be interred at Covey Hill Cemetery during a private ceremony with immediate family. Visit Richard’s webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com to archive favorite memories, photos and sign his guestbook.
