Maureen Metty was born in Detroit, MI on December 15, 1948, the 1ST daughter of Eldred and Ellen (Krieg) Metty. After five sons (Eldred, Warren, Denis, Mark and Dale), Maureen arrived and was followed by two younger daughters (Christina and Ellen). She was a member of St. Sylvester Parish in Warren, MI at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on August 19, 1988. Her reception was held on July 1, 1990 and she pronounced first vows on July 5, 1992 and final vows on November 5, 1995.

Maureen graduated from Osborn High School in Detroit, MI and worked for twenty years; two years with the National Bank of Detroit, and eighteen years with Chatham Super Market in various capacities before responding to a call to continue her education by becoming a nurse and eventually entering a community of women religious.

Maureen received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Macomb Community College in 1987 where she met Sr. Janice Miller who invited her to ‘come and see’ the Sisters of St. Joseph. After her entrance into the Congregation Sr. Maureen worked as a Nurse at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 1992 from Nazareth College. Sister’s nursing experiences included geriatric, neuro-intensive care, pulmonary intensive care, and hospice nursing.

In 1998 Sr. Maureen was the inspiration and foundress for the beginning of Kairos Dwelling, a home for the terminally ill in Kalamazoo. She also pursued Certification in Massage Therapy and ministered at Kalamazoo Center for the Healing Arts, Borgess Health Integrative Medicine, and to pregnant women during labor and delivery on the Birthing Unit at Ascension Borgess Hospital. While being the main caregiver for her dear friend, Sister Mary Bader before her death, Sr. Maureen completed the Spiritual Direction program at Manresa Retreat Center in Jesuit Ignatius Spirituality and became a Spiritual Director. In 2011, Sr. Maureen became the Healthcare Liaison for the Congregation of St. Joseph at Nazareth Center and ministered to and with the sisters and staff who lived and worked at Nazareth and Fontbonne Manor.

During the months and years of her own physical struggle with a lung fibrosis that seriously affected her breathing, Sr. Maureen continued to minister to family, friends, sisters, staff, and anyone else who came to know her through her loving presence and concern for them. Motivated by the loving relationship she had with her God she shared that love with each one as she responded to whatever they asked of her no matter the age or circumstance of their life. Her constant motivation was… “the person comes before the task.”

May She Rest In Peace!
