Gary Cumming

Gary Cumming of Kalamazoo, age 52, died Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, following a 15 year battle with cancer. Gary was born December 21, 1969 in Kalamazoo. Baseball was a life-long love, starting with playing catcher at Westwood Little League and continued with following the Detroit Tigers with his wife, Carrie. He was a 1988 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School where he excelled in swimming. Gary served in the US Coast Guard, graduated from the Police Academy at KVCC and worked as a Kalamazoo County Sherriff. Gary received a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree from Boston University and attended WMU Cooley Law School. Gary married his true love, Carrie Boysen, on June 22, 1991, who survives. “I married Carrie for her spaghetti.” he often said. Also surviving are two wonderful children: Nicole Cumming and Michael Cumming (Lauren); his parents, Irving and Alberta Cumming; sister, Karen (Jeff) Hydar and their children: Courtney, Alexis and Sarah; brother-in-law, David (Allison) Boysen and their children: Kevin, Alex and Mark; sister-in-law, Ann (Steve) Filkins and their children: Blake and Luke. Gary was preceded in death by in-laws: Carl and Marsha Boysen. Cremation has taken place and private services are planned.
