Life Story / Obituary

Print

Age 86, died on June 12, 2020. Valdis was born October 4, 1933 in Valmiera, Latvia, the son of Peteris and Milda (Priedkalns) Nodievs.

The youngest of 3 children, Valdis escaped Latvia and the German Army in the mid 1940’s with his parents and sisters, courageously immigrating to America. Their family was sponsored by farmers and they worked several farms around the country before settling in Michigan which suited Valdis and his love of nature just fine. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Western Michigan University. He enjoyed nothing greater than spending time on his property, surrounded by the forests and animals. Even the deer stayed in his company, knowing they were safe and respected. Valdis was the best godfather and uncle, remembering every birthday and special holiday. Having no children of his own, he often took his nieces and nephews on trips to the Kalamazoo Bird Sanctuary and zoos, sharing his passion for nature with them. His impact on the lives of his family will be forever remembered.

Valdis was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his 2 sisters: Aira Lielzuika and Gita Grivins; nieces and nephews: Ardis (Holly) Lielzuika, Lilita Lielzuika-Bush, Kaija (Ed) Petrovskis, Guntars Grivins, Sandra Balog, and Raimonds (Anita) Grivins; and many great nieces and great nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held. Visit Valdis’ personal webpage at www.BetzlerLifeStory.com where you may archive a favorite memory or photo, and sign his online guestbook. Memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Bird Sanctuary or his family for funeral expenses. Arrangements by Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo 269-375-2900.
