Ulysses "Butch" Dixon, age 71, passed away peacefully in his home on October 19, 2020. He was born December 7, 1948 in Jackson, Mississippi to the late Eddie and Ezella Mannie Dixon. Butch graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in East Chicago, Indiana. He went on to attend Pikeville College where he played basketball and met his wife "Gay." After college, Butch served in the Marines before returning home to work for the City of Kalamazoo Police Department for 26 years, eventually becoming the Department's first black Captain. Butch's first love was his family and he was always there for friends and family. He especially adored his granddaughter. In addition to being an exceptional handyman, Butch enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. Butch was united in marriage to Gaynell Dixon (July 21, 1969), who preceded his death in 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Ezella, and his siblings, Doristeen Campbell, Leroy Dixon, Douglas Dixon, Bobby Dixon, and Carl Dixon. He is survived by his children, Derrick Dixon and Kelli Dixon, and granddaughter, Maci Charleston. Butch also leaves to cherish his memory many sister-in-loves, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Cremation has taken place and plans for a post-pandemic memorial/celebration of life are being considered.
