Life Story / Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Mohney, age 78, of Lawton, died on December 20, 2024. He was born on July 1, 1946, in Kalamazoo to Marshall and Pauline Mohney, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his son, Chad Newell, and his sister, Marlene. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Joan, and his best friend, Brian (Annette) Pfeifer. His legacy of hard work, passion, and unique character will forever be remembered by all who knew him.

A man of boundless energy, Tom was always driven to stay busy and make the most of every moment. He had a passion for cars and everything to do with cars. He collected and restored antique petroleum items, including oil cans and gas pumps. His collection grew so large that took two full days to auction it all to excited buyers! Tom’s love for cars led him to own his own body shop, where he worked tirelessly. Recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing his own Corvette. Drag racing was another major part of Tom's life, and he relished the thrill of the track.

In addition to his automotive passions, Tom enjoyed RV trips to the west coast with Joan. He was a perfectionist in every sense of the word, driven by the belief that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. If it wasn’t perfect, he wouldn’t stop until it was.

Though Tom faced numerous health challenges throughout his life, his determination and work ethic never wavered. He could often be found researching new topics with his analytical mind, diving deep into subjects to fully understand them. This relentless curiosity and attention to detail were key to the way he approached everything in life.

In recent years, Tom embraced the art of woodturning and created beautiful wooden bowls, showcasing his creativity and precision. He was a one-of-a-kind individual who made a lasting impression on everyone he met. Many of his classmates would often stop by unannounced just to visit, unable to forget the impact he had on them.

Tom’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his legacy of hard work, dedication, and kindness will never be forgotten.
