Susan Carlson

Susan Carlson (nee Schaaf) was born February 5, 1946 in Westchester, Illinois to Willard (Bill) and Jeanne Schaaf. The family moved to Coloma, Michigan in 1953, where Susan attended School, graduating from Coloma High School in 1964.

In 1965 she married Daniel Carlson and they moved to Kalamazoo. She lived there the remainder of her life. Susan and Dan divorced after seven years, but remained friends.

Susan and her second husband, who is deceased, owned Medical Data Processing, a patient billing company.

She went back to school after several years and received a BA from Spring Arbor, then a Masters of Social Work from Western Michigan University.

Susan taught for a few years at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. She taught meditation and the study of love. She loved to attend seminars and retreats on personal and spiritual growth.

Susan had a great love for the beauty of nature, its animals, its flowers and trees, and beautiful skies. She was an avid photographer. Susan had many pet cats over the years, and adored them.

Susan died July 22, 2023 in Comstock, Michigan. She is survived by her brother, Steven Schaaf of Columbia, Maryland, and cousins: Donna, Gaye, Lisa and Kurt. Her parents preceded her in death.

Cremation has taken place. Susan did not wish to have a funeral service. Donations may be made in her name to the animal shelter of your choice.
