Life Story / Obituary

Print

Sally Ann Callahan was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, on December 6, 1934, the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Suzor) Callahan. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Parish in Wyandotte, Michigan at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on January 1, 1957. Sally received the name Sister Lawrence Marie at her reception on July 2, 1957, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on July 2, 1959 and final vows on July 2, 1962.

Sister Sally earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Nazareth College and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. She began her ministry at St. Francis Home for Boys in Detroit and, after ten years, transitioned into Social Work at the Sarah Fisher Home. From 1981-1990 she worked as a Social Worker supervisor at St. Louis Center for Exceptional Boys in Chelsea, Michigan. From 1990-1993, Sr. Sally was on the staff of L’Arche Daybreak, a residential community of persons with severe disabilities in Richmond Hill, Ontario. This was also the home and ministry of Fr. Henri Nouwen who became Sally’s spiritual director. Father Nouwen had a personal influence on Sister Sally’s life and her devotion to Mary became much deeper and stronger. These years were personally rewarding and filled with joyful purpose for Sr. Sally. In 1993 she returned to Nazareth where she worked in the Nazareth Business Offices. Then when she retired she served at the Nazareth switchboard and Fontbonne Library.

Sister Sally was a woman who endured much physical suffering throughout her life, but her strong faith enabled her to accept the cross she bore each day with a smile. She was very community-minded and was most generous in offering assistance to others. Her favorite Scripture passage from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me,” was the motivating force which enabled her to maintain a positive attitude towards life. Sister Sally appreciated the love and support she received from her family, SSJ community and friends throughout the years. This year 2026 Sr. Sally celebrated 70 Years as a Sr. of St. Joseph. With joy and deep gratitude we thank God for her life among us. May Sister Sally now be welcomed into the presence of God where she will enjoy eternal rest and peace.

May She Rest In Peace!
