Mary Elaine Schwartz was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 11, 1929 the daughter of Frank Schwartz and Elizabeth (Saar) Schwartz. Mary Elaine was a member of St. Philip Neri in Detroit, MI at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on July 1, 1947. She received the name Sister Mary Cecilia at her reception on January 3, 1948, but later returned to her baptismal name. Sister Mary pronounced first vows on January 3, 1950 and final vows on January 3, 1953.

Sister Mary enrolled at Nazareth College where she earned a Bachelor Degree in Music. Sister Mary continued her education and in 1969 she received her Master’s Degree from Catholic University of America with a major in Religious Education. She taught piano for nine years and then became a pioneer in pastoral ministry and developed a course for those preparing to become pastoral ministers. After this degree was developed, she received an honorary degree herself.

Sister Mary began her Ministry in elementary education at Immaculate Conception in Anchorville, MI. She then went on to teach at many other diocesan schools in Michigan including St. Augustine in Kalamazoo, Francis Xavier in Ecorse, St. Mary’s in Niles, St. Henry in Lincoln Park and St. Patrick’s in Portland. In 1973 Sister Mary moved to Trenton, Michigan where for the next seven years she served as Pastoral Minister and taught religious education at St. Timothy’s. For the next 23 years Sister Mary continued her Pastoral Ministry at various diocesan parishes including St. Denis in Lexington, St. Joseph in St. John’s, St. Paul in Owosso and St. Felix in Pinnebog, Michigan.

In 2004, Sister Mary moved to Nazareth and continued her ministry in volunteer services. In all, Mary was sent to more than thirteen missions where she touched the lives of many instilling faith in God to many who still remember her. Sister Mary enjoyed, as a spectator, figure skating, bowling and all kinds of dancing. May Sister Mary now enjoy eternal life tap dancing, waltzing and joining in song praising her loving God.

May She Rest In Peace!
