Life Story / Obituary

Carol Brock was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 25, 1936, the daughter of Otis and Margaret (Nelson-Aikman) Brock. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish in Highland Park, Michigan at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on January 2, 1954. She received the name Sister Margaret Marie at her reception on July 2, 1954, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on July 2, 1956, and final vows July 2, 1959.

Sister Carol attended St. Benedict Grade School, Sacred Heart High School in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Nazareth Academy after entrance. In 1968 Carol graduated from Nazareth College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. For 20 years, Carol’s teaching ministry was in the Detroit area, Flint and Watervliet. In the late 1970’s, Carol came to Nazareth Center where she worked in Congregational Services as a Driver for the Sisters, worked in the Nazareth Post Office and at the Community Switchboard. In 1989 Sister Carol moved back to Detroit where she worked at Cabrini Place in the Social Services Department. Later on, Sister Carol headed south to Houston, Texas where she cared for HIV positive children who were offspring of women who were drug users. This same type of ministry continued in East Chicago, Indiana at Nazareth Home, where she served as a foster mother to children with a variety of medical problems. In 2000, Sister Carol returned to Nazareth in Kalamazoo to minister to the needs of Sisters at Borgess Nursing Home.

At the time of her Golden Jubilee, Carol expressed gratitude to her family, friends and Community for their love, support and affirmation over the years. She said: “I thank God for all that ‘has been’ in my life and I say ‘yes’ to whatever the future holds in store for me.” Carol’s joyful serenity and humble, generous self-giving in bringing God’s healing love and care to all she served has been a graced blessing for many in a variety of ministries. May God who called her home welcome her to the fullness of eternal life and joyful love.

May She Rest in Peace!
