Sally Fredenburg

As all who were lucky enough to know and love Sally Fredenburg can certainly agree, the radiant warmth of her joyful presence brightened the lives of so many. She was a source of support and encouragement in all circumstances, and she welcomed anyone and everyone with open arms. A devoted wife and mother, Sally’s family was the focus of her life, and she took every chance to hold her loved ones close. Her generous spirit pushed her to go above and beyond in service to those around her, and the example of compassion and selflessness she has set will not soon be forgotten. Dearly missed, Sally will be forever loved and cherished.

Throughout her childhood, Sally enjoyed a typical upbringing of her generation in most ways. Born in Kalamazoo on July 26, 1953, to Duane and Marilyn Hughson, she was raised on the North side of the city alongside her two brothers, Duane Jr. and Terry. As a girl, Sally spent a lot of time with her grandparents. She had fond memories of visiting the family farm west of Paw Paw. Sally always had a special place in her heart for animals. In addition to having dogs and cats of her own, she would take in strays and care for the homeless animals around. Sally received her education at local schools. She then moved on to attend legal secretarial school and earn her associate’s degree. Sally was social and had a close group of great friends. She loved cheering on the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers. Around this time in her life, she discovered her love for music. Sally especially loved listening to country and classic rock, and a local band called Device was her favorite.

A thrilling chapter in Sally’s life was beginning to unfold as she met the young man who would forever hold the key to her heart. His name was Bob Fredenburg, and their paths first crossed while Sally and Bob were serving as volunteers with the Red Cross. She and Bob had been invited to lunch by a mutual friend who had to duck out at the last moment, so they decided to go anyway. Sparks flew between them over that lunch, and their relationship quickly blossomed. Bob ended up moving to Ann Arbor for his career in software engineering. He asked Sally to come, and she was happy to agree. Sally and Bob went on to enjoy many wonderful years of marriage and companionship.

It wasn’t long before Sally’s family began to grow. While living in Ann Arbor, she and Bob were overjoyed to welcome their two beloved children, Johnathan and Elizabeth, into their hearts and home. As the kids began to grow, they decided to settle back down in Kalamazoo. Sally thrived in her role as a mother, and her children were truly the light of her life. She instilled in Elizabeth and Johnathan the importance of kindness and empathy, and she supported them in all of their various animal rescues over the years. Sally also raised her kids with a deep appreciation for nature, encouraging them to play and explore outside. During the summers, she loved taking Elizabeth for drives, complete with McDonald’s fries and blasting “Kate Wants a Fast One!” Of course, Sally’s family expanded to include the many honorary family members she had “adopted” over the years, all special people who made Sally’s life brighter. Her beautiful cats were always considered members of the family as well.

One of Sally’s favorite pastimes was wine tasting. She and Bob visited countless wineries through their travels, both in Michigan and beyond. They would travel up to Traverse City, and their adventures in wine tasting led them to many great restaurants. Sally’s favorite winery was Cherry Hill, and she especially loved her sweet wines. She and Bob often whisked away for trips to quaint little towns, where they would shop and enjoy the local food. Sally always enjoyed the restaurant scene and loved going out to eat. Colonial Kitchen and Main Street Pub were a couple of her favorite spots, and she liked going out to eat with her mother as often as she could.

Christmas was a special time of year for Sally. She would pour her heart and soul into her baking during the Christmas season, making breads, cookies, and cakes to give away. In recent years, Sally and Bob enjoyed spending overnight weekends in Frankenmuth before Christmas. The kind of woman who could always find contentment in the quiet moments at home, Sally also enjoyed crocheting and creating thoughtful, hand-made gifts for the people in her life, including blankets and personalized gift bags and ornaments. She usually had numerous projects going, enlisting the help of her kids and husband. Sally’s generosity shone in her kindness to strangers. For years, she would leave gift bags on the porch for delivery drivers. If anyone needed help with their animals, Sally was eager to lend a hand. A lifelong animal lover, she loved spoiling the pets with treats.

As family and friends can surely attest, Sally Fredenburg truly understood the secret to a life well lived. She was a powerful role model of unconditional love, and her loved ones were undoubtedly her greatest treasure. Although life will never be the same without Sally here, she leaves behind a shining legacy that we can be proud to carry on in her footsteps.

Sally Fredenburg of Kalamazoo, age 72, died on June 29, 2026. Sally was born July 26, 1953, in Kalamazoo to Duane and Marilyn Hughson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Duane Hughson, Jr and Terry Hughson and 12 cats. Surviving is her husband Bob Fredenburg: children: Johnathan Fredenburg and Elizabeth Fredenburg and many nieces and nephews and her beautiful cats Alex, Loki, Sam, Isabel, MacBeth, Athena, Gandolf and Jax.
