Life Story / Obituary

Print

Richard Olson of Kalamazoo, age 75, passed away on August 14, 2022. Richard was born May 17, 1947 in Mt. Pleasant to Carl and Ruth (Milloy) Olson. Richard has been described by many as fun to be around, didn’t take life too seriously, meticulous with his work, sharp, kind heart, and a quick wit.

A graduate of Loy Norrix High School, class of 1965, Richard went to work for his brother John at his tire business in Mt. Pleasant. He would then marry Patricia (Patty), wife of 56 years on April 23, 1966. His career aspirations led him to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps as a third generation electrician. He joined the IBEW apprenticeship. Richard was a hard worker and it didn’t go unnoticed as he was promoted to foreman as an apprentice, and became a journeyman shortly after. He was known as “Dick” in the building trades community. Workmanship, leadership, and knowledge spoke for itself as he was assigned to some of the largest construction projects of their time in the Kalamazoo area. He was tenacious and knew how to execute a project on time and enjoyed taking ambitious apprentices under his wing. The ones that weren’t so ambitious would likely say that they didn’t care for him. His high standards for quality of work and strong work ethic never wavered. Richard enjoyed spending time with family. He loved fishing on the Great Lakes, deer hunting, watching motorsports, and relaxing on his boat in South Haven. He’ll be greatly missed but always remembered.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers: Tom Olson, John Olson, and Bob Olson. Surviving are his wife, Patricia; children: Dawn (Scott) Barnes, Richard (Denise) Olson, and Brian Olson; grandchildren: Blake, Hunter, Samantha, Noah, Hannah; siblings: Emmy (Mike) Fawley and Bill Olson; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Donations to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission in lieu of flowers. Visit Richard’s webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com to archive favorite memories, photos, and sign his guestbook. Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo 269-375-2900.
