Life Story / Obituary
Like a breath of fresh air to everyone who came her way, Nancy Sharp found value in living life to the fullest, loving her family, and cherishing the blessing of friendship. Always on the go, Nancy filled her time with others, most often putting their needs before her own. Her humorous and witty nature provided good times for all, and for these things and more, Nancy will be deeply missed.
The year 1960 ushered in an entirely new way of thinking within the culture of America. The Vietnam War was at the forefront of politics, headlines, heartache and peace movements while racial tensions soared. Young people made their voices heard through demonstrations, and it seemed as if an age of innocence were being lost to the threat of nuclear war. Despite looming problems the world over, many found reprieve in the form of drive-in theaters, music of the day and beloved television shows. In the midst of these changing times, there was one thing on the hearts of Bill and Martha (Yarbrough) Cagle of Paw Paw, Michigan and it was the October 2, 1960 birth of their baby girl, Nancy.
Nancy grew up in the quaint little village of Paw Paw. There she experienced a childhood reflective of the times growing up as the third of four children in the Cagle home. She joined her older siblings, Glen and Kathy, and later welcomed younger sister, Amy. Both of Nancy's parents worked to support their family at Paw Paw Plating, and as a family faithfully attended church together. As a youngster, Nancy enjoyed playing with neighborhood friends at the local parks, and into her youth liked roller skating. She especially loved singing in church, and dancing which was something she continued to do throughout her life.
After graduating from Paw Paw High School in 1978, Nancy entered the work force when she was hired at Production Rubber Products. It was there where Nancy met the love of her life, Tom Sharp. Tom loved Nancy's outgoing and energetic personality, and they shared a lot in common. After dating for a few years and completely in love, they were happily married on July 30, 1988 in a small ceremony at Tom's house. Before long they shared the joy of becoming parents to their daughter, Jennifer, who along with children Becky, Krissy and Chris completed their family. Together Nancy and Tom raised their children in a loving and caring home.
As a parent, Nancy was a loving disciplinarian. She taught her children right from wrong, and that a little hard work goes a long way. She lived by example, and set the tone for treating others as they would want to be treated. Nancy seemed to always worry about everyone but herself. Selfless in all ways, she was very family oriented, and she treasured the many friendships she shared.
There were many things in life that Nancy enjoyed. She really liked camping, and as a family they often took their camper to Decatur. Not afraid to get her hands dirty, she also enjoyed fishing. Just taking in the outdoor air was enough for Nancy as she relished being outdoors. She had enough energy and then some, and found it hard to sit still for too long. She struggled to sit through an entire movie, and found it difficult to watch TV or even read. Her home was extremely tidy. In fact, one could even go as far as saying she was a neat freak! Along with being neat and tidy, Nancy also felt it was important to be prompt - and early was always better than late in her book. She spent her down time crocheting which she loved, and loved singing Karaoke, especially old country and Christian. She also liked gospel music, too.
Family meant everything to Nancy. She loved her husband, children and grandchildren more than anything. She completely accepted her son-in-law as her own, and they all shared great times together. Whether family or friend, everyone enjoyed Nancy's company. She found the greatest joy in her four lovable grandchildren: Sierra, Jayla, Skylor and Zane. Nancy counted the greatest days of her life being the day she became Tom's wife, the birth of her children, and becoming a grandma. She was close to many members of her family, including her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her, "Aunt Duck" because of the way she waddled following her surgeries. Her grandchildren came up with their own sweet names for Nancy, such as Maggie, Gamie, and Lancy.
In spite of many health concerns throughout her life, Nancy remained her witty and energetic self at every opportunity. During high school, she fought scoliosis. Having been in a body cast, she was home schooled during this time. Although she tried to remain active and working, her health issues eventually forced her to go on complete disability from her job at Rubber Products. After being diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago, Nancy's strong will and determination fought hard against the constant battle of the disease. Never once did she complain about her pain or predicament. For Nancy, it was especially difficult to remain bedridden after being so active all her life. The year 2012 was especially hard on Nancy, and her family marched by her side every step of the way. When no cure was in sight, and Nancy's health continued to worsen, the realization was evident. Hospice was called in to care for her and to make her comfortable.
A fine combination of a gentle breeze and a whirling burst of wind, Nancy was indeed a breath of fresh air, adding much to the lives of others. Above all, Nancy Sharp truly valued life and her family, and her loving ways were mixed with a witty nature all her own that will never be forgotten. And in all ways, she loved each of you . . . more.
