Life Story / Obituary
Nan Marie Burris-Emmert, 67, of Kalamazoo, passed away on March 22, 2026. She was born on June 15, 1958, in Allegan, Michigan, to Clyde and Shirley (Munn) Burris.
Nan was raised with humble beginnings on a farm, where she developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for caring for others. After marrying Patrick Michael Walsh, she embraced city life in Kalamazoo and built a home centered around family, warmth, and generosity.
Nan had a big heart and was always looking for ways to help others, both people and animals. She volunteered at a local animal shelter and had a special place in her heart for every pet she cared for. She deeply loved her children and her animals, who brought her constant joy.
Her home was a place where everyone felt welcome. No one ever left without a full belly, and there was never a shortage of food, snacks, or comfort. Nan always put her children first and was a fierce advocate for them, especially throughout their school years. She showed up to every sports practice, packed their lunches every day, and made sure they were cared for in every possible way.
Nan found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved shopping, gardening, and watching the Weather Channel… never letting a storm pass without checking in on those she loved. She also loved spending time at the beach, especially vacationing in South Haven along the shores of Lake Michigan. Her garden was a source of pride, and she was known for growing some of the best tomatoes and zucchini around.
She is survived by her husband, Matthew Emmert; her sons, Sean Patrick Walsh and Alexander Michael Walsh; her mother, Shirley Winn; and her siblings, Margaret Rath, Terry Burris, and Michelle Winn. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Burris, and her brother, David Burris.
A funeral service celebrating Nan’s life will be held on Friday, March 27, at 3:00 PM at 12th Street Baptist Church, with a reception to follow in the church hall.
Those who wish to honor Nan’s memory are invited to share photos and memories on her dedicated webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com.
Nan will be remembered for her endless generosity, her deep love for her family, and the way she made everyone around her feel cared for, welcome, and at home.
