Maureen T. Gergely

With a gentle spirit and a vibrant personality, Maureen T. Gergely lived a life rooted in faith, family, and friendship. She led with her heart in everything she did, offering a calming presence, a radiant smile, and an unwavering optimism that lifted those around her. Whether welcoming a stranger, comforting a loved one, or simply sharing a conversation, Maureen reflected kindness, grace, and compassion. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Maureen was born on February 3 in Sandusky, Ohio, to the Murray family. The fifth of eight children, she grew up in a lively household alongside her older brothers Tom, Bob, Pat, and Jim, and her younger siblings Joe, Mary, and John. Life in a home with eight children, and just two bathrooms, was never dull. Her father was a respected attorney in Sandusky, while her mother devoted herself to raising their large family. During her teenage years, Maureen worked at Cedar Point and attended St. Mary's High School, where she was a cheerleader and thoroughly enjoyed school.

Following high school, Maureen attended Marygrove College, a Catholic women's college in Detroit. It was there, while dining in the Marygrove Dining Hall with classmates, that she caught the attention of a young law student who was waiting tables there. Michael Gergely often said he knew from the moment he saw Maureen that he was going to marry her.

After college, Maureen and Michael began their life together in Detroit. In 1965, they welcomed their first son, Michael, whose life was heartbreakingly brief, passing away at just nine months old. Through that profound loss and every challenge that followed, their deep Catholic faith remained their source of strength and hope.

Their family continued to grow with the births of Chris in 1966, followed by Tim and Mary. Maureen embraced her role as the heart of the home, creating a place where everyone felt loved, supported, and cared for. She prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, always including eggs in the morning, and became an exceptional cook. Inspired by Michael's Hungarian heritage, she mastered family favorites such as chicken paprikash, goulash, and homemade chicken soup, meals that became expressions of her love for those gathered around her table.

Faith remained the cornerstone of Maureen's life. She began each morning reading her Bible, taught CCD for many years, and found great joy in sharing her faith with children. She also loved opening her home to priests, welcoming them for meals and conversation, finding fellowship in hospitality and friendship.

Eventually, the family settled in Schoolcraft, Michigan, where they built a home on 80 beautiful acres. It was a place where family life flourished, children played freely, and there always seemed to be another stretch of lawn waiting to be mowed. When the children were young, Christmases were often spent together at the family's condominium in Clearwater, Florida, creating treasured holiday memories.

Maureen enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life. She loved playing tennis and, together with Michael, was an active member of the Kalamazoo Country Club. She also had a passion for antiques and collectibles, especially her cherished doll collection.

Known for her remarkably positive outlook, Maureen found joy in everyday life. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and had a gift for making people feel comfortable and valued. Even during difficult times or when she wasn't feeling her best, she rarely complained. Her favorite response to life's simple question, "How are you?" was always, "Super great."

Nothing brought Maureen greater happiness than her grandchildren. She treasured every opportunity to spend time with them and loved preserving family memories through photographs. Usually the one behind the camera, she faithfully carried a disposable camera wherever she went, capturing birthdays, holidays, vacations, and everyday moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. Although her family tried more than once to teach her how to use the camera on a cell phone, she remained loyal to the simplicity of disposable cameras.

Perhaps one of Maureen's greatest gifts was the example she and Michael set through their marriage. They complemented one another beautifully, each instinctively knowing "which lane to stay in," and together they built a relationship grounded in love, faith, mutual respect, and unwavering partnership. Fittingly, they shared breakfast together on the morning of their 62nd wedding anniversary, the very day Maureen passed away.

As we celebrate Maureen's beautiful life, we are reminded that the greatest legacies are often found in the quiet, everyday ways we love others. Every time we choose kindness over judgment, faith over fear, gratitude over complaint, or welcome others with warmth and generosity, we honor the example Maureen lived so faithfully. When we gather around a home-cooked meal, treasure time with family, capture life's precious moments, and lead with our hearts, her spirit lives on in all of us.

Maureen died on August 1, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Michael Thomas Gergely; and her brothers, Thomas Murray, Robert Murray, Patrick Murray, James Murray, and Joseph Murray.

Maureen is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Michael C. Gergely; her children, Christopher (Colleen) J. Gergely, Tim (Heidi) Gergely, and Mary C. Gergely; her twelve cherished grandchildren; her sister, Mary (Murray) Bosrock and brother, John Murray and many extended family members and dear friends.
