Life Story / Obituary

Marty Duncan, age 73, passed away on May 25, 2026, leaving behind a world made brighter by her presence and a family forever shaped by her love.

Marty was born and raised in Cheboygan, Michigan, and no matter where life took her, a part of her heart always remained there. She was a true Northern Michigan girl through and through.

More than anything, Marty loved her family. She leaves behind her daughters, Kari Kanaga (Jeremy) and Stacy Duncan (Alaina), who were blessed to call her Mom and friend. She was an incredibly proud grandmother to Luke Duncan (20), Ellie Kanaga (17), Maxwell Scott (13), Carter Kanaga (12), Lennon Scott (11), Lola Kanaga (10), and Ruby Kanaga (10). Her grandchildren were one of the greatest joys of her life, and she treasured every moment spent cheering them on, laughing with them, and making memories they will carry forever.

She is also survived by her brother, David Cleary (Diane), along with many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, humor, and unforgettable spirit.

Marty was preceded in death by her father, George Arthur Cleary, and her mother, Evelyn Marie Cleary.

To know Marty was to know someone truly one of a kind. She moved through life with infectious joy, smiling and laughing her way through each day and refusing to take anything too seriously. She was unapologetically herself — authentic in every way — from her brightly ornate outfits and dressing for every occasion, to her love of rock hunting and her passion for every dog she met along the way. Marty never passed a dog without stopping to say hello.

She chose to enjoy life and make the most of every moment, and she had a gift for bringing everyone around her along for the ride. Her kindness was unmatched. She treated loved ones and strangers alike as family, and her warmth had a way of making everyone feel seen. Marty lit up every room she entered — her energy unmistakable, her presence a true gift. If you were lucky enough to know her, you were truly blessed.

More than anything, Marty was a teacher — not in a classroom, but through the everyday moments and quiet lessons woven into ordinary days. She was a safe place, a steady presence, and the loudest, most unwavering supporter of the people she loved.

Her legacy will live on through her daughters and grandchildren — perhaps in their love of shopping, their affection for animals, or their appreciation for life’s little treasures — but most importantly in the way they love life deeply, find joy in the small things, and show compassion to everyone around them.

We are forever touched by your love, Mom, and forever grateful for the joy you brought into this world.

While our hearts ache in her absence, we take comfort knowing she is whole again, reunited with loved ones, and in the presence of Jesus. Her love, laughter, and legacy will continue to live on in all of us. Celebrate Marty's life online by sharing your favorite stories and photos on her dedicated webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com.
