Life Story / Obituary
Lynn Orlowe Grammel passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 63 years old.
The rock of her family and a warm, radiant presence in her community, all who knew Lynn Grammel will certainly agree that she brought joy and light into every room she walked into. She was a constant source of strength and encouragement, no matter the circumstances, and she always thought of others before herself. A nurturing wife, mother, and grandmother, Lynn cherished every moment spent with her family and friends. Her generosity has left an impact on so many, and she went above and beyond to care for those around her in her tender, loving way. Forever loved, Lynn will be deeply missed.
Lynn was born on January 5, 1963, in Blue Island, Illinois, to Thomas and Barbara Orlowe. She grew up in Westland, Michigan, and moved to Big Rapids, Michigan in 1979. Lynn graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1981 and went on to attend Ferris State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Following college, Lynn began her career as an insurance agent with AAA. In 1992, she married the love of her life, Rick Grammel. Together they built a life centered around family and love. Lynn and Rick welcomed their son, Jib, in 1995 and their daughter, Jena, in 1997.
In 1999, Lynn made the decision to become a stay-at-home mom, a role she held for nine years and one she often said was one of the greatest blessings of her life. Being a mom was Lynn’s most cherished title, and she embraced it with endless love, dedication, and pride.
Lynn was truly the heartbeat of her family. Though she had a calm nature and could be quiet at times, she was incredibly strong and deeply determined. She had a hug that would instantly make you feel at home and a smile that could light up any room. She was an incredible cook who loved hosting gatherings with friends and family. Although she is already dearly missed, Lynn leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that her loved ones will forever hold near and dear to their hearts.
Lynn loved the sunshine and the beach. Her perfect day was spent by the water with family and friends, soaking in the sun, sharing laughter, and enjoying a few cocktails together. If there happened to be a beach bar nearby that served oysters, that only made the day better. Being near the water brought her a deep sense of peace and joy.
Shopping— or at least window shopping—was one of her favorite ways to relax and recharge. She also had a special love for dogs. Any dog. If Lynn walked past one, she simply had to stop, meet them, and give them all the love and attention she could.
In 2014, Lynn returned to the workforce at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. For the past five years, she served as a Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator, where she found deep fulfillment in helping adult learners navigate their educational journeys and achieve their dreams.
In 2024, Lynn gained another title she treasured deeply—GiGi. She welcomed her first grandchild Lawson in 2024 and Scotlynn in 2025. Her grandchildren quickly became the light of her life, bringing her immense joy in her final years.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jib Grammel; her parents, Barbara and Thomas Orlowe and Step-Mom Christine Orlowe. Surviving are her husband: Richard “Rick” Grammel; daughter Jena (Jake) Toth; grandchildren: Lawson and Scotlynn; siblings: Dawn (Bruce) Hammond; Sister in-laws: Denise (Rich); Lisa (Eric) Formberg; and many nieces and nephews.
Please join us at Life Story Service on Friday April 10th at 11am. An hour of visitation will begin prior to the service from 10 AM - 11 AM at Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo (269) 375-2900.
Lynn will be remembered for her warmth, her generosity, her quiet strength, and the way she made everyone around her feel welcomed and loved. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished so deeply.
