Julie Heath

Julie passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.She lived her entire life in Kalamazoo, deeply connected to her roots and the lifelong friendships that she cherished. Julie’s story is one remembered with gratitude, affection, and the quiet certainty that her life truly mattered.

Born on December 17, 1947, Julie was the eldest child of Glen Campbell Smith Jr. and Gail Gilmore Smith. She graduated from Loy Norrix High School and attended Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Julie is survived by her two children: Christian Stanley Heath of Kalamazoo, MI, and Amy Gail (and Andrew) Shepherd of Ann Arbor, MI. She is also survived by her two grandchildren: Andrew Morgan “Drew” (and Martha) Shepherd of Denver, CO, and Austin Glen Shepherd of Grand Rapids, MI.

Julie inherited her parents’ humanitarian spirit, carrying on their legacy of generosity and compassion. She felt a deep responsibility to support organizations dedicated to relieving suffering and uplifting those in need. She gave quietly, consistently, and with a sincerity that left a lasting impact across Michigan and in the lives of countless individuals.

She lived life on her own terms with an independent spirit and quiet strength. Her favorite hobbies, such as tennis, downhill skiing, planting flowers, painting, playing cards, and laughter with friends, brought out her vibrant spirit. But nothing brought Julie more joy than her grandchildren. Known lovingly as “Grammy,” she poured her heart into her role as a grandmother. She especially enjoyed attending their many events throughout their formative years and early adulthood and was endlessly proud of them. She made each grandchild feel uniquely loved and celebrated, creating memories that will remain among the most treasured of their lives. Some of her family's most cherished memories are of lazy summer days spent swimming, playing board games, and snuggling up together to read a book or watch a movie.

Julie’s passing leaves a profound absence, but her legacy is one of love and generosity. She will be remembered for her humanitarian heart, her devotion to her family, and her unwavering commitment to living life her way. A life remembered by friends and family with love and gratitude. A life that mattered.

Her family takes comfort in knowing she passed peacefully, surrounded by those she loved most.
