Life Story / Obituary
Jenny Hartman of Kalamazoo, age 82, passed away on February 24, 2026. Born on June 4, 1943, in Kalamazoo to James and Marjory (Love) Phelps, Jenny was the oldest of six children and carried that role with quiet strength and lifelong devotion to her family.
Jenny lived a life defined by curiosity, independence, and deep love for those around her. A devoted reader, she consumed thousands of books over her lifetime, carefully keeping organized lists (binders full) of authors and genres. Beach days, sunshine, reading, and family gatherings were among her greatest joys—though those who knew her might gently debate which she loved most.
She had a gift for hospitality and was known for her beautifully prepared meals and impeccable presentation. Her potlucks, taco bars, dinner parties, and especially her deserts were legendary. Creative with her talents, Jenny enjoyed cross-stitch and sewing, sharing her skills with family members. She found joy in travel, especially in Europe, with Barcelona, Spain holding a special place in her heart for its vibrant cityscape and culture.
Fiercely independent and particular in her ways, Jenny knew what she wanted and where everything belonged. Even her text messages reflected her thoughtful nature—carefully written, never abbreviated, and often filled with well-considered questions. Jenny worked as an Executive Secretary at Upjohn Company, always demonstrating the same diligence and organization that characterized every aspect of her life.
Above all, Jenny will be remembered for her companionship, her thoughtful conversations, her attention to detail, and her warm, steady hugs. Her family will miss her dearly and carry her love with them always.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Phelps. Surviving are her children: Glen (Jonna) Brigham and Kelly Lynk (Ken); grandchildren: Katie (Donny) Piper, Justin Lynk, Caroline (Lucas) Estanislau, Jessica Lynk, Scott Brigham, and Jillian Lynk; great-grandchildren Akayla, Alexis, Kaylin, Saniyah, Ariana, Crista, and DJ; siblings: Thomas Phelps, Patrick (Martha) Phelps, Sally (Gary) Spence, and Valerie Eastman; and many nieces and nephews.
