Kindhearted, selfless, and always willing to go above and beyond for others, Jennifer Schmitt lived with a radiant warmth that naturally drew people in. She was a steady source of strength in every season of life, giving generously of her time and energy to make the world around her better. Above all, Jennifer treasured her family, cherishing every moment spent with those she loved. Her arms, and her heart, were always open to anyone in need. Deeply loved by many, she will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.

The late 1960s were years of great social and cultural change for the United States of America. The Vietnam War raged overseas, calling countless servicemen away from home. In the world of entertainment, iconic artists such as Johnny Cash and the Beatles were topping the charts. It was during these influential years that Jennifer made her entrance into the world. Born in Peoria, Illinois, on March 26 of 1968, Jennifer was welcomed by her parents, John and Elizabeth (Eisiminger) Costin. As the youngest of seven children, Jennifer joined her older siblings, Kevin, John, Karen, Eugene, Yvonne, and Danny, in the Costin household.

Growing up on the family farm, Jennifer developed a deep love for animals early on. Whether riding horses bareback or helping round up animals that had wandered off, she was always eager to lend a hand. Her passion led her to become active in 4-H, where her enthusiasm and dedication were evident. In school, her artistic talents began to shine through her love of painting and music. She later pursued a degree in computer science at Illinois State University, which led to an internship, and ultimately a successful career, with State Farm.

It was during her time at State Farm that Jennifer met Kurt Schmitt, the man who would soon capture her heart. After getting married, they moved north to Michigan to follow Kurt’s career opportunities. While their careers supported their lives, it was their family, faith, and volunteering that defined them. Jennifer and Kurt were overjoyed to welcome their children—Jake, Kyle, and Nikki—into their home. Jennifer embraced motherhood wholeheartedly, sacrificing without hesitation to ensure her children were raised in a loving and supportive environment. She considered herself truly blessed to be surrounded by her family.

Serving others was central to Jennifer’s life. She found great joy in volunteering, especially in efforts that supported children and animals. At the Kalamazoo County Fair, she helped run the goat barn, combining her love of both. She was especially passionate about helping those experiencing homelessness or hardship, often serving holiday meals at the Gospel Mission and inviting others into her home for a warm meal and fellowship. Jennifer had a remarkable ability to notice when someone was hurting—and an even greater instinct to reach out and help.

Her faith was the foundation of her service. Jennifer was deeply involved with Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries, contributing to fundraising efforts, mentoring women, and pouring love into the lives of children. She also loved spending time with Shalom Ministries, which included bringing Tango and Tulie (donkeys, of course) to Farm Days each fall. Even as she faced her own health challenges, her faith only grew stronger, becoming a powerful source of inspiration to those around her.

Jennifer also found joy in creativity and thoughtful giving. She spent countless hours making personalized quilts, blankets, and crafts for friends and family. Holidays were especially meaningful, often filled with crafts and games (Bananagrams anyone?) that brought the whole family together. She enjoyed thrifting and garage sales, always on the lookout for hidden treasures and relishing the fun of bargaining. On one memorable trip to Greece, she found a marble-carved chess set for her children. She was excited after perfectly negotiating the price, although Kurt was left to carry the heavy gift back to the hotel!

In quieter moments, Jennifer loved hunting for agates and Petoskey stones. Each year, as soon as the ice melted at Petoskey State Park, she and Kurt were there, no matter how cold it was. In recent years, Jennifer and Kurt cherished simple time together, treasuring every moment. Jennifer’s love for animals was lifelong. She delighted in caring for her animals, which included bottle feeding baby goats in the kitchen, and the ‘queen of the farm’, her donkey, Jenny, who even had her own box of Fruity Pebbles. She also found comfort in snuggling with her dog, Lucy, especially in her final remaining days.

Those who knew Jennifer will remember her as patient, compassionate, and full of joy that brightened every room she entered. She was quick with a smile, generous in spirit, and a shining example of steadfast faith and determination. A devoted wife, mother, and friend, Jennifer held her loved ones close and lived a life defined by quiet acts of kindness. Already so greatly missed, Jennifer leaves behind the torch of her legacy that her loved ones can be proud to pick up and carry on in her footsteps.

Jennifer Schmitt of Richland, age 58, died on April 14, 2026. Jennifer was born March 26, 1968 in Peoria, Illinois, to John and Elizabeth (Eisiminger) Costin. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Kevin Costin.
