Life Story / Obituary
With a ready smile and warm, welcoming heart, Jeffrey "Jeff" Sirk lived a life rich in family and friends. Jeff was naturally light-hearted, outgoing, and genuinely loved people. He mastered the art of balancing good fun and hard work, welcoming each day as a gift. Even in the face of life's most significant challenges, Jeff chose optimism and unwavering determination, making the best of every moment. A kind man who listened with sincerity, laughed wholeheartedly, and generously shared his time and talents without hesitation, Jeff touched, moved, and inspired all who were blessed to know him. A beloved son, husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Jeff will long be remembered by those he so dearly loved.
The 1990s proved to be a decade of much good news and astounding new achievements, including the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa. The quality of entertainment dramatically improved, and creative brilliance appeared in our homes in the likes of Harry Potter, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Friends, and NYPD Blue. Pixar resurrected animation with Toy Story while the digital age boomed with the mainstreaming of the Internet, digital phones, 3-D games, and affordable laptops. Peace and Prosperity were the order of the day, and American culture was vibrant and healthy as well. During this vibrant time, Jeff was born on April 10, 1992, on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
Raised as an "AF kid brat," Jeff's early years solidified his outgoing and people-pleasing personality. He was proud to receive a perfect attendance award and loved going to Sea World, where he imagined a future as a marine biologist. As a single child, Jeff's rottweiler, Shelby, became his security blanket and best buddy.
After his father retired from the military, Jeff and his dad moved to Coloma, Michigan, near his mom and other relatives. After Jeff's parents divorced, and his father married Denise Matheny in 2009, Jeff was happy to create wonderful connections with Denise's four sons, Damien, who is ten years older, Matthew, who is eight years older, Zach Matheny, who is the same age as Jeff, and Elijah Matheny, who is four years younger than Jeff. Sadly, Jeff's mother, Christine, died in 2014.
Easy-going and genuine, Jeff enjoyed many laughs and good times with friends and family. He loved barnyard basketball and shooting hoops with his buddies at the school across the street from his house. Jeff acquired his father's taste for metal music, and his dad took him to see Alice Cooper, his first concert. During high school, Jeff began playing the guitar, grew his hair out, and ran his fingers along the brick wall to toughen them up. His best friend for life, Matt Hutchins, introduced him to other music besides metal, and the two boys could usually finish each other's sentences.
After graduating from Coloma High School in 2010, Jeff continued his education at Lake Michigan Community College. Having earned a business scholarship from Whirlpool, Jeff lived at home and drove a crappy Ford Focus to save up money. In time, he earned his bachelor's degree in finance from Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University, then pursued another bachelor's degree online from Colorado State University. Jeff was proud that Hungry Howie's, where he started in delivery and advanced to assistant manager, helped him put himself through college.
Jeff found joy in many things, including his dogs, sports, music, and shared experiences with those he loved. He was delighted to enjoy the companionship of another Rottweiler, Xeena, and watch the New England Patriots, the New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Lakers. Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, and Kobe Bryant were his favorite players. Jeff and his brother Zach grew really close, walking the dogs and listening to music. He liked everything from Disney Musicals to Iron Maiden, Blink-182, Pop Punk, and Taylor Swift. Jeff inspired his younger brother, Elijah to play the guitar, and the two of them made videos of them singing and playing. He was also obsessed with Oakley sunglasses, many of which were lost on the basketball court and at the bottom of lakes.
When a mutual friend introduced him to Kayleigh Jackson, Jeff fought his shyness while listening to a Beatles cover band in St. Joseph and got her number. Having recently bought his dream car, an Audi A5 (later upgraded to an A7), he fondly called "Drogon," Jeff felt he had a chance and asked her out. It wasn't the car that inspired her to say yes; it was her surprise that such a quiet, kindhearted guy would ask her out. The couple went on their first date in August of 2017 and bought a house together in 2018, where they enjoyed the good company of their fur babies, their dog, Apollo, and their cat, Ringo.
In addition to enjoying their home and pets, Jeff and Kayleigh shared fun adventures and travels. In 2019, they attended a friend's wedding in California and later visited an animal sanctuary in New York. A trip to see Jeff's brother Zach in Colorado was great fun, as was a trip to Hocking Hills in Ohio. One of their fondest memories was Jeff's Christmas mind-blowing present to Kayleigh: Taylor Swift tickets! The couple and Jeff's buddy Matt loved the show from their floor seats in Detroit.
Jeff was working his dream job as a financial analyst at Hydro Aluminum in Kalamazoo, and things were going great. Then tragedy struck the summer of 2018 when Jeff suffered severe ulcerative colitis that required major surgery. Recovery didn't go well, and many issues ensued. On December 24, his practitioners put him in a medically induced coma and moved him to Franciscan Heath in Indianapolis for over a month. Though he faced many complications, he somehow survived them all.
With great hope for the future, Jeff carefully planned an amazing engagement, sharing with all of his rehab nurses along the way as he worked for weeks to build up the strength to get down on one knee. On March 30, 2019, Jeff rented out the entire State Theater in Paw Paw for a special viewing of "How to Train a Dragon." As they sat in the theatre alone, Kayleigh thought it was a bit odd, but she enjoyed watching the movie with her dragon-loving sweetheart. As the movie ended, a slideshow of all their memories began on the screen, and Jeff got down on one knee and proposed. The theater changed its marquee to read "She said Yes!"
The happy couple married in a small service on January 22, 2022, at Warner Vineyards in Paw Paw. The celebration was small because of COVID, but it was filled with tremendous love. Kayleigh was truly the love of his life!
Jeff loved fantasy football, Madden Football, Guitar Hero, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. His D and D characters and moves were very well thought out. Jeff loved learning and would have kept going to college if someone had paid for it. His insatiable curiosity and desire to learn led him to watch documentaries, play chess, and play Jeopardy, which his equally brilliant wife excelled at. Jeff's nieces and nephews were also a source of great joy. He loved Niyana, Sydney, Clara, and Stevie very much and hoped to one day be healthy enough to have children of his own.
Another love of Jeff's was cooking. Chef Jeff excelled at pizza and anything spicy. He embraced his Mexican heritage and their spicy dishes. His chicken enchiladas and chili were unrivaled. His favorite snack was Flaming Hot Cheetos, and he always enjoyed a Silver Beach or Chicago-style Pizza. Never one to settle for a simple gift, Jeff also enjoyed creating exceptional, thought-filled experiences for loved ones. Often the life of the party, Jeff relished making people laugh. In addition to his epic Christmas gift and marriage proposal, Jeff once hired Alice Cooper to sing a cameo song for his dad with his name in it while his dad was in the hospital. Again, another example of his desire for deep thoughtfulness and shared experiences.
Despite his long battle with colitis, which resulted in his being on disability, Jeff's death has a big shock for all. As we wrestle with the realities of Jeff's sudden absence, may we find much comfort in our many treasured memories. May we also find comfort in carrying his legacy of kindness, respect, and dignity forward. Whenever we lead with our hearts, choose hope over fear, mindfully create a special acknowledgement, welcome a stranger as a friend, share a laugh with a loved one, generously share our gifts, and play a good game with our beloved, we celebrate the countless ways Jeff made the world a better place. In this way, we keep his memory alive and inspiring others as he so inspired each of us.
