All who were fortunate enough to know James Miller can certainly agree that he exemplified what it meant to live each day with stubborn dedication. He was always willing to go above and beyond to brighten the lives of those around him. A devoted family man, James never missed a chance to hold his loved ones close. He took genuine interest in the people around him and was ever present as a helping hand and a source of strength. His heart of gold touched the lives of so many for the better. Deeply loved and admired, James will be forever missed.

The late 1940s were exciting years to be living in the United States of America. Following the end of WWII in 1945, the world was beginning to heal. It was during this influential time that Harry and Evelyn Miller of Huntington, Indiana, welcomed the arrival of their new baby. On November 1, 1949, they were so happy to announce the birth of their son, James.

James was one of three children in the Miller household and was raised in the family home alongside his two sisters, Barbara and Susan, and their beloved dachshund, Gus.

As the proud child of a railroad worker and homemaker, James looked up to the example set by both of his hardworking parents and learned the importance of a strong work ethic at a young age, which stayed with James for life. James grew up in the Catholic faith, serving as an altar boy and attending local Catholic schools through eighth grade. Following his graduation from high school, James went on to study economics at IU-Purdue. To save money, James lived at home with his family and worked hard to put himself through school.

It wasn’t long before James’s work for Montgomery Ward brought him to Kalamazoo, Michigan, his home for the next five decades. While he was working on obtaining his securities license, he managed a clothing store called Chess King, where he would strike up a lifelong friendship with Jake Smith. Similarly, in a chance encounter standing in line outside The Old Detroit bar, he met Renee Miller (Chaprnka), who would later become his wife. The two were married in 1990, and though their marriage would end in divorce in 1998, James was forever grateful for their two beautiful children, Jacqueline (Jackie) and Anderson (Andy).

James thrived in his role as a father to Jackie and Andy. His kids were truly his pride and joy, and he was very involved in their childhood. He took them on memorable vacations growing up, including an ice fishing trip to Houghton Lake and their 10+ years of annual Disney vacations. He also enjoyed spending time with them alongside their beloved golden retriever, Buddy. He was often proud that never missed his kids’ events, concerts, or special occasions.

Never one to sit still for long, James had many hobbies that filled his free time, which he shared with his kids. He passed down his love of sports to both Jackie and Andy, coached their teams, and encouraged them to pursue their passions. When Andy chose to play soccer, James taught himself the rules to coach him. He even traveled to Europe with Jackie’s concert band when she was in high school.

Later in life, James was overjoyed to become a grandfather to his precious granddaughter, Estella. He always considered himself deeply blessed to watch his family grow to include so many loved ones.

James stayed busy with a long and fulfilling career with Wiser Financial. He was passionate in helping others achieve their financial goals. He was proud of the close relationships he built with those he worked with, serving as both a mentor and advisor to many over the four decades of work with the company. James attended several work conferences and won many award trips for his excellent work.

After his kids, sports became James’s biggest passion. In his younger years, he was extremely athletic. He played basketball, baseball, and football through middle school, then continued to excel in both basketball and baseball in high school. In his later years, he remained active in sports, sharing a love of golf with Andy, and tennis and skiing with Jackie. He spoke fondly of his “once in a lifetime” round of golf at Spyglass Hill with both of his kids and a trip to the US Open in New York with Jackie.

When he wasn’t working, he could often be found in the stands at Western Michigan basketball games. As a proud season ticket holder for more than 25 years, he attended as many games as he could, both home and away, holding on to every ticket stub as a keepsake. James was also an avid fan of the Indiana Hoosiers, the Yankees, and the Detroit Pistons, for whom he was a season ticket holder during the “Bad Boys” era. James also frequented the Junior National Tennis Championship hosted at Kalamazoo College every August.

James was also a voracious reader. His love for learning was constant and fueled by his collection of nonfiction, sports, biographies, and newspapers. He was known for his insatiable sweet tooth and his love of ice cream and chocolate shakes.

James ran on his own clock, but you would never meet someone with a bigger heart. When reflecting on the life and legacy of James Miller, it is easy to see both his unwavering dedication and unconditional love for his family, friends, and clients. He could always offer a piece of wisdom or a listening ear, and he strove to be fully present in every moment he had with the people around him. A devoted father, grandfather, and friend to many, James was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. No one was a stranger for long, and his passion for basketball and sports will not soon be forgotten. In his own words, James was “the real McCoy.”

Though he is already so dearly missed, James leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that his loved ones will forever hold close to their hearts.

James Miller, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, age 75, died on September 3, 2025. James was born on All Saint’s Day, November 1, 1949 in Huntington, Indiana, to Evelyn and Harry Miller. James was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Evelyn Miller, and brother-in-law, Steve Burnworth. Surviving are his children: Jacqueline “Jackie” (Som) Miller, and Anderson “Andy” (Angela) Miller; nephew: Shane Burnworth; grandchildren: Estella Maria Cena-Miller; and siblings: Susan Burnworth and Barbara Bailey.
