Life Story / Obituary
A source of joy to all who met her, Gracie Kavanaugh was known for her kindness, gentle, loyal heart, cheerful and generous disposition, and ever-present smile. Naturally kind and empathetic, Gracie led with her heart in all things, embracing each day as a gift and every person as a friend. Whether attending classes, cheering on her peers, babysitting, vacationing, boating, or giving an embracing hug, every day was an adventure Gracie cherished sharing with her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, auntie, and friend, Gracie will forever be remembered by those she so dearly loved.
Born at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on September 26, 2007, Gracie was the beloved daughter of Kevin and Veronica Kavanaugh. Gracie grew up in the loving company of her older siblings Joseph and Rachel, and enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at the family's cottage at Gun Lake, where she learned to swim. It was here that she learned how to help drive the boat at age 4, but when she took the helm for the first time she knocked out the transmission! Years later, Dad would be teaching her how to drive a car.
Though a shy toddler, Gracie's confidence blossomed when she began school. She attended St. Monica School from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She was on the cheer team and played volleyball. Gracie's family enjoyed watching her grow into an energetic, yet poised teenager with a contagious laugh who also gave out the best advice. Her loving family always encouraged her innate quality of empathy towards others. A cheerful and smiling presence in the school's classrooms and hallways, Gracie truly "had a smile that could light up a room!" She enjoyed playing lots of jokes, making people laugh, and spending time with her nieces, who fondly called her "Auntie."
Gracie possessed an adventurous spirit and thoroughly relished any opportunity for an adventure. She loved summer vacations at Grandma Ruth’s yellow cottage in South Haven. Unafraid to travel even at a young age, she traveled regularly to Hammock Beach in Florida, Disneyland in her flip flops and red/white striped Minnie Mouse dress, LegoLand on opening day in California, and spring vacations at the Country Music Association Festival in Nashville. Many fond memories were enjoyed at the cottage on Gun Lake, fishing and driving the pontoon boat, and of course getting pizza on the boat, with her constant canine companion, Josie, always on the boat’s bow with her ears flapping in the wind. Wonderful family memories were created as the ‘wedding crashers’, parking the pontoon close enough to BayPointe resort’s outdoor weddings so that all could dance in the dark on the pontoon. Closer to home, any time spent with her grandmas, Ruth and Josephine, proved a treasured gift. Even her beloved dog, Josie, was named after her grandma.
As a high schooler at Hackett Catholic Prep, Gracie’s participation included serving on the Student Council, being cheer captain, and Latin Club; An excellent student, she especially loved and excelled at Latin. A natural girly-girl, she felt naturally confident in her high heels and carefully curated fashion and loved planning big birthday parties. At the age of 14, she competed in and won the Miss Kalamazoo pageant, and advanced to finish fourth in the Miss Michigan Teen contest, being its youngest contestant. No matter how successful she was, Gracie always remained humble and never boasted about her accomplishments.
Gracie recently took her first solo trip to visit the love of her life, her boyfriend Will, in North Carolina. She was looking forward to celebrating her 18th birthday in Florida on a beach. She also expressed the desire to see Ireland as one of her next big adventures. Enrolled in fall classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Gracie was on the path to begin fulfilling her dream of transferring to a university nursing program and earning a Bachelor's of Nursing degree, thus using her gifts and talents to help others.
A joyful, adventurous soul whose life was filled with love, laughter, and countless memories shared with family, friends, and her beloved dogs Josie and Tucker, Gracie lived each moment to the fullest. Though our days with her were far too few, every moment we shared with her is a gift we will forever treasure. As we navigate our overwhelming loss, may we find comfort in carrying Gracie's legacy of unwavering faith, generous love, steadfast kindness, and enthusiastic adventuring forward. In each moment of our own lives, may we also welcome each day as a gift, radiate joy, generously serve others, say "Yes!" to an adventure near or far, curl up with our canine companions, enjoy a Starbuck's pink drink, sink our toes into a sandy beach, and warmly hug and tell our loved ones "I love you," to celebrate the countless ways Gracie made the world a more beautiful and loving place. In this way, we keep Gracie's memory alive and inspiring to others as she so inspired us.
