Elide "Ellie" Quiñones

Kindhearted, selfless, and deeply devoted to those she loved, Elide “Ellie” Quinones touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She met life’s challenges with grace, determination, and a strength rooted in her steadfast faith in the Lord. Nothing brought Ellie greater joy than her family, and she treasured every moment spent with those she loved. Her generous heart extended far beyond her family, as she willingly gave her time and talents to her church, her community and anyone in need. Ellie leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, strength, generosity and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Ellie’s story began in Venezuela on January 2, 1933. After losing her mother when she was two years old, she was raised by her aunt and uncle alongside her older sister. Her early years were not always easy, but those experiences helped shape the remarkable strength, compassion and resilience that would define her throughout her life. At 19, Ellie married Emiliano and went on to become the proud mother of four children.

Family was always at the center of Ellie’s world. Her children - Edgardo, Ender, Elenis and Edwin- were her greatest source of pride and joy. In 1961, the family moved from Venezuela to the United States. They stayed briefly in Jackson, MI and then moved to Kalamazoo and eventually settled in Stevensville MI. Building a new life in a new country brought many challenges, including learning English, but Ellie met each obstacle with the determination that characterized her life. She worked hard to ensure that her children learned English and had every opportunity to succeed.

Even as she built a life in America, Ellie remained deeply connected to Venezuela and to the culture and traditions she loved. She returned to her homeland several times over the years and made sure those roots remained an important part of the family’s story. Her cooking was legendary and the family enjoyed eating arepas, pastellitos, hallacas, and quesillo.

Ellie’s compassion reached beyond her own family. Remembering the relatives who had opened their home to her when she was a little girl, she chose to do the same for others. She became involved as a foster parent, opening both her heart and her home to children who needed love and stability. It was one of the many ways Ellie lived out her belief in caring for others.

Ellie was also hardworking and talented. While living in Venezuela, she worked as a keyboard operator and later as an English instructor. In the United States, her love of knitting, crocheting and sewing became a part of her working life. She worked as a seamstress at Jacobson’s and specialized in altering wedding gowns and formal wear. Her work there introduced her to women from many parts of the world, and she enjoyed the friendships they formed and the different foods and cultures they shared over lunch.

Later in life, Ellie experienced one of her greatest joys: becoming a grandmother to sixteen grandchildren. She delighted in caring for them, especially through her cooking and the special meals she prepared. Her grandchildren truly were the light of her life and she took enormous pride in watching her family continue to grow. She was blessed to welcome fourteen great-grandchildren as well, another generation for Ellie to love, nurture and cherish.

The Spanish speaking church at Calvary Bible Church was also very important to her and she made many friends there. She was treated like a matriarch of the church and rarely missed a Sunday in attendance. Her special friend, Jean, attended with her. Pastor Santiago and his wife Jen were like family to her.

Ellie will also be remembered for her love of Rummikub, Andy Williams, Latin music, sense of fashion, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was excited to learn that her namesake, Ellie Rose, had recently taken up sewing and made several outfits!

Ellie enjoyed her time at Story Point and made many friends there as well. She became very close to the Executive Director Janna, the nurses, and the staff there.

Above all, Ellie’s life was grounded in faith and family. She lived by the words of Romans 8:28 -

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” Although she will be forever missed, Ellie leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that her family and friends will hold close to their hearts for many years to come.

Elide “Ellie” Quiñones of Kalamazoo, age 93, died on July 27, 2026. She was born January 2, 1933, in Venezuela to Jose Miguel Duran and Angustia Cegarra. She was preceded in death by her daughter Elenis Bacaycay. Surviving are her children: Edgardo Quiñones, Ender (Jan) Quiñones and Edwin (Mary) Quiñones, 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Su amiga especial, Jean, asistía con ella. El pastor Santiago y su esposa Jen eran como familia para Ellie.

Elide “Ellie” Quiñones, de Kalamazoo, de 93 años, falleció el 27 de julio de 2026. Nació el 2 de enero de 1933 en Venezuela, hija de José Miguel Durán y Angustia Cegarra.
