Life Story / Obituary
Don Speelman was born on May 11, 1963, in Battle Creek Michigan. His father James worked hard for Michigan Bell and his mother Janet worked at Kellogg’s and then was a crossing guard for 25 years. Don graduated from Battle Creek Lakeview High School in 1981.
He married Robbin Hotchkiss and together they had two children: Chris and Matthew. Though the marriage ended in divorce, Don was grateful for his time with Robbin and their children. His family would later grow to include grandchildren.
Known not to sit idle, Don was always tinkering with things and found great solace and comfort in building things with his hands. Serenity seemed to follow him when a project was completed, whether it be something in his woodshop, a meal that he made on his grill or a project at work. Always wanting perfection, he was a craftsman at whatever task he attempted.
Known as a passionate, loving, and strong-willed man, Don enjoyed the simple things in life such as family, chocolate-covered cherries, taking care of his lawn, and a round of golf. He will be missed by those who loved and cared for him but the love that he shared will go on for his family and friends
Don died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. His family includes his son Matthew and his wife Erica, his son Chris, 7 Grandchildren: Gabriel, Rosealie, Zach, Isaiah, Jacklyn, Anastasia, and Elizabeth; his sister Deb and her husband Mitch Miller and a brother Bob Speelman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson CJ.
