David A. Hackney of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away on April 28, 2025. He was born on October 23, 1942 in Paw Paw, Michigan to Clarence and Josephine (Kuite) Hackney. In 1967 he married Jean C. McIntyre and is survived by her and his 6th doggie companion, Esther.

David graduated from University High School and received a “Bachelor of Science” degree from Western Michigan University in 1966. He went on to spend his lifetime educating young people for 32 years as a math teacher at Parchment High School. He will be remembered by many students as a patient and outstanding teacher and by his friends for his sharp mind and delightful sense of humor.

For over 50 years, David and his small group of friends gathered for BNO, Boys Night Out. A group of couples called “The Team” would also gather to have fun!

He was an avid dog lover and was preceded in death by his 6 dogs: Lady, Elsah, General, Buddy, Bill and Lucy. David was also an avid bowler, golfer, reader, picture puzzler, biker, skier, and loved to watch sports especially Michigan State University basketball and football. He also did cross stitch.

He loved to travel. His favorite memories were bareboating on a sailboat in the Caribbean with friends, biking down the side of a dormant volcano in Hawaii, and traveling the winter months in his fifth wheel to Tucson, Arizona and Palm Springs, California.

He is survived by his wife Jean; sister Louise (Bill) Haas, nephew Steve Haas; sister Jean Manner, nephew Jeff Manner (Barb Colacioppo), nieces: Amy (Patrick) Moser, Karrie (Derrick) Popa; in-laws: Vern and Louise Robinson, Christine McIntyre (Chris Kulco), and Ed and Beth Koryno.

Though David will be greatly missed, David leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that his family and friends will hold forever, near and dear to their hearts. As his wife Jean always said, “If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I’d walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again! Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal.” May your personal memories with David warm your hearts and make you smile forever.

Please join us at a Life Story Visitation on Monday, May 5, from 5-7 PM at Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo (269)-375-2900.
