Life Story / Obituary
Dan Patnode, age 54, died unexpectedly at his home in Kalamazoo. Dan’s legacy is one of patience, love, and laughter. Born December 19, 1969, Dan’s life was accented by his passions and generosity. He found joy in music, having played electric guitar in a band during his younger years, and was a lifelong animal lover. Starting with his grandmother’s dog, Blackjack, Dan always had a furry friend by his side. From his own dogs and rescuing cats (perhaps a few too many) to keeping exotic pets like fish, birds, even freshwater sharks, his home was a sanctuary for creatures big and small.
His true passion was working at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo. Dan could be a bit introverted, but working with the museumgoers brought out the best in him as he coordinated their visits and special events.
Dan also discovered his talent for wrenching on old cars. He was always tinkering and had a gift for keeping them running well past their time.
His pride and joy was his daughter, Honnah. Together the pair enjoyed the simple pleasures like tubing behind the boat or stopping for sweet snack, a Payday and a Push Pop. Video games were one of “their things,” as Dan introduced Honnah to Xbox. Countless hours were spent playing games like NHL 2002, Black Ops 2, and other games.
Dan’s calm presence, generosity toward others, and the laughter he so often inspired will linger for years to come. Preceding him in death are his parents, Lee and Katherine, and his brother, David. Surviving are his daughter, Honnah Patnode; siblings, Deb (Tim) Beebe and Diane Patnode (Ken Fletcher); nieces and nephews: Justin (Sarah), Brandon, Cassie (Richard), Jenny (Adam), Hannah (Tiff), Diego, Maya, and Nicholas (Katie); Aunt Barb Larson and Uncle Jim Hopper; several cousins; and his dog, Shadow.
A Celebration will be held Friday, May 10, from 5:30-7:30 PM at The Air Zoo, 6151 Portage Rd, Portage, MI 49002. Share your favorite stories and photos on Dan's dedicated webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com.
