Life Story / Obituary
Chester Grays was a hard worker, provider, loving, and full of laughter. He lived a life rich in family and friends. He was a true family man who relished providing for his loved ones. Bright and generous, his friends would describe him as funny and laid back, but don’t get it twisted, he’ll put you in your place. A man who faced life's challenges with determination and confidence, Chester embodied his belief while speaking with his oldest son "When life knocks you down, you get back up, and you keep going." An inspiration to all who knew him, Chester will long be remembered and missed by those he so dearly loved.
In 1957, a time of innovation, the U.S. economy was booming. The need for consumer goods grew as manufacturing attempted to keep up with demand. It was the peak of the "baby boomer" era and a time when families prayed, played, and sat at the dinner table together. American Bandstand debuted as Elvis Presley recorded numerous hits, and the introduction of the Frisbee and Tonka Trucks delighted children everywhere. It was a time centered on family and hope. Nowhere was their greater hope than in the hearts and home of Oscar and Lizzie (Hodges) Grays as they welcomed their son, Chester, to their family on November 29, in Gilmore, Arkansas.
The Grays moved to Covert, Michigan, when Chester was young. Along with his eight siblings, he attended local public schools and played a lot of streetball. He proved to be a talented point guard but didn't play on school teams as he loved playing on the street. He loved basketball, especially the Lakers with Kobe Bryant and Shaq O’Neal. Before he turned 18, Chester began working at Borgess Hospital as a housekeeper. During a friend’s gathering in the mid 1980’s, Chester met Treval and instantly fell head over heels for her. It was love at first sight for both of them. Chester loved Treval's beauty, charisma, and smile and in the early 2000s he proposed to her at the house while the kids were there. The kids were SO excited and shocked. Chester and Treval later married in 2002.
In time, Chester and Treval had the joy of welcoming five children to their family. Chestin, Travon, Chessica, Tashyah, and Kidada were the centers of their world, and they worked as a team to care for them. While Treval stayed home to tend to the children, Chester devoted himself to providing for his family and worked constantly to give them everything they needed. Chester firmly believed in taking "care of your household first" and "always be there for your family." And though he worked long hours, it made him happy to provide them with enough to have great experiences like their own individual boxes of cereal, roller skating at Rollerworld, early morning matinee movies, or just spending time with family in Covert. When the kids had a pet Guinea pig, Sootie, Chet made sure the kids didn't keep her out too long because she'd go to the bathroom everywhere in the house.
Chester had a passion for old-school cars, and he LOVED his grey Cadillac with the gold spokes, Buick Avenue with the white walls, and his Mercury Cougar. He made sure he had the best sound system, newest rims, and impeccable mahogany interiors. He had connections to local sellers for all the best car parts, and he meticulously handwashed the cars in his driveway. Chester was picky & strict about his cars when asked if you can drive, but when prom came around for his son, he made sure Travon stepped out in style. He even let Travon drive the Cadillac. Much like his attention to detail with his cars, Chester loved to dress to impress especially with his brothers and friends hitting the town.
A man who found happiness in life's simple pleasures, Chester cherished time with his loved ones and the pleasures of a good meal. He loved homemade hamburgers, oatmeal, and "Chet's Favorite": Meat n Corn, a dish made with hamburger meat, canned corn, and onions. He also enjoyed baked chicken with white rice and cream of mushroom soup.
As we celebrate Chester's life, may we find much comfort in our many treasured memories. May we also find comfort in the honor of carrying his legacy forward. In each moment we work hard to provide for our family, confidently face life's challenges, tend to our favorite things with great care, cheer on our loved ones' endeavors, and share laughter and the good company of those we love most, we must keep Chet's memory alive and inspire others as he so inspired each of us. As his sister Lilly remarked, Chester was amazing to be around. He was always there when she needed him. Love him but let him go in peace In Jesus name.
