Life Story / Obituary
With generosity, strength, and sparkle, Bedi Gray lived a life rich in family and friends. Bedi led with her heart in all things, amplifying life’s joys and softening its hardships at every turn. Strong-willed and determined, especially when solving a problem or facing a challenge, Bedi was also a natural-born giver of love and gifts. Bedi’s heart’s delight was her friends and family, and she cherished every moment they shared. She left an indelible mark on all that she touched and proved an inspiration to all who were blessed to know her. Bedi will be forever missed by those she so dearly loved.
On July 2, 1964, Merle and Beverly Gray welcomed their daughter, Bedi, into the world in Madison, Wisconsin. The youngest of two children, Bedi grew up alongside her older brother, Jim. The siblings were complete opposites, Jim was quiet and studious, while Bedi was outgoing and loved being around people. Like many brothers and sisters, they had their share of disagreements growing up, but their bond and love for one another remained strong.
Bedi’s childhood was shaped by hardworking parents. Her father, a bricklayer, often traveled out of state for work, spending long stretches away from home. Her mother was a nurse practitioner who also taught courses at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, combining her passion for health care with education.
As a teenager, Bedi embraced an active and vibrant social life. She participated in Girl Scouts, played tenor saxophone in her school band, and developed such a talent for music that she attended Interlochen to further her saxophone studies. Whether through music, friendships, or extracurricular activities, Bedi thrived on connections and involvement.
After graduating from Elk Rapids High School in 1982, Bedi enrolled at Ferris State University. Inspired by her mother’s career in medicine, she knew she wanted to work in health care. However, she also knew she preferred a path that would keep her far away from blood. In 1987, she earned her bachelor’s degree and set out to begin the career that would shape the next chapter of her life.
After beginning her career as a medical DRG consultant with Laguna Healthcare, Bedi found her professional home at Ascension Borgess, where she served as a Clinical Documentation Specialist. For nearly three decades, she worked alongside physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams to ensure that patient records accurately reflected the care being provided. Her attention to detail, expertise, and collaborative spirit made her a valued member of the healthcare community and contributed to better patient outcomes.
Outside of work, Bedi's life was filled with the people, places, and pets she loved most. Having grown up with Schnauzers, it was only natural that she would welcome Schnauzers into her own home. Over the years, Scooter and Max brought her endless companionship, and today Daisy-Mae and Levi continue to hold a special place in her heart.
Bedi's passion for travel began early, sparked by family adventures that created memories to last a lifetime. One of her most cherished childhood trips took her family westward through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and across the sweeping landscapes of the Dakotas and Wyoming. As an adult, her love of exploration carried her across Europe, where she enjoyed unforgettable journeys with extended family and friends through Ireland, Scotland, England, France, and Spain. She loved discovering historic sites, local culture, and, of course, plenty of shopping along the way.
No matter how far she traveled, Northern Michigan remained one of Bedi’s favorite places. She treasured time spent at the family cottage on Higgins Lake, where days were filled with boating, enjoying the outdoors, watching ducks and hummingbirds, and gathering around the table for favorite card games like Shanghai. She also never missed an opportunity to browse the treasures at Arnie’s craft store, a beloved stop during her time at the lake.
Bedi cherished holidays and any occasion that brought loved ones together. She deeply valued the relationships she cultivated throughout her life, especially her lifelong friendship with Terri Shane. Bedi lovingly embraced Terri’s daughters Emily, and Lauren, as her own goddaughters, and treasured the many milestones, traditions, and everyday moments they shared as a family. Their friendship was one of extraordinary depth and devotion. Bedi was Terri's trusted confidante, standing beside her through life’s greatest joys and most difficult challenges. She was present in the delivery room as Terri and Rick welcomed both of their daughters into the world, and that love was returned through Terri’s care and support during Bedi’s final chapter. Together, they shared a remarkable sisterhood built on loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love.
Bedi’s creative spirit commonly found an outlet through crafting and scrapbooking. These hobbies she enjoyed alongside a close-knit group of friends, armed with glitter glue, Cricut machines, and an endless supply of creativity. She delighted in making cards, embellishing scrapbook pages, and adding sparkle to everything she touched. While her perfectionist streak often left projects perpetually “in progress,” she found just as much joy in the creative process as in the finished product. Her enthusiasm for all things glitter earned her the affectionate titles of “Sparkle Queen” and “The Bedazzler.” For more than a decade, Bedi and her friends gathered twice each year for crafting retreats filled with creativity, laughter, and friendship. As a beloved member of groups affectionately known as the Chicklets and the Cabinet Ladies, she formed lasting bonds and countless memories.
Bedi also had a true talent for shopping. Whether searching for the perfect gift or simply enjoying the thrill of the hunt, she approached shopping with enthusiasm and remarkable skill. Her thoughtful gift-giving reflected how deeply she knew and cared for the people she loved, and few things brought her more happiness than finding just the right present and seeing the joy it brought to others.
As we celebrate the woman we fondly called Daughter, Sissy, Godmother, Professional Shopper, Betty Boop, Sparkle Queen, or Friend, may we find much comfort in our countless memories and the honor of carrying Bedi’s legacy of rich and meaningful relationships forward. In each moment we choose to embrace others with unconditional love, meet life’s challenges, and add a dash of sparkle to the lives of others, we keep Bedi’s memory alive and continue inspiring all to live each moment to the fullest.
Bedi Gray, age 61, died on May 27, 2026. Bedi was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving her is her brother, Jim (Annette) Gray; her sister, Terri (Rick) Shane; her goddaughters, Anna Hall, Emily and Lauren Shane; and Jim and Annette’s daughters, Pang (Pam) and Plai.
Bedi’s family would like to thank Rose Arbor for the loving care that Bedi received. They would also like to thank her close family and friends who watched over her, especially in her final moments with us.
