Life Story / Obituary

Anne Sykes was born August 30, 1942 in Leicestershire, England; a time when the world was at war and blackout curtains covered the windows at night. Despite those uncertain days, her childhood was rooted in simple joys and strong community. Families lived close together, most within walking distance, and life moved at the pace of buses, footpaths, and neighborly connections. Her family once opened their home to a refugee during the war, a gesture of kindness that stayed with her for years and reflected the quiet compassion that would mark her life.

Music shaped her early years and remained a constant thread throughout her life. She grew up in a Wesleyan Methodist Church where her father served as the organist, and she quickly discovered her own love for singing. Choir became both passion and refuge; something she carried with her through every stage of life. After attending primary school and secretarial school, she eventually welcomed her daughter, Elizabeth “Liz,” the center of her world. She devoted herself fully to motherhood, staying home while Liz was young and returning to work later, once Liz reached high school.

Anne’s life took a new direction when she and her beloved husband, Malcolm, moved to Kansas from 1981 to 1986 before eventually settling in Owosso, Michigan. There, she built a life rich with friendships and community. She worked in title services for a local company and became deeply involved in social clubs, including English heritage groups that helped her stay connected to her roots. Though Malcolm was the avid golfer, she spent time at the Owosso Country Club alongside him, enjoying the camaraderie and shared experiences.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Anne and Malcolm loved shopping, traveling within the United States, and cheering on the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. A gifted baker, she was known for her English recipes; “biscuits” cookies, and traditional puddings that brought warmth to every gathering. Holidays were especially dear to her. She loved hosting family and friends, attending Nutcracker performances with Liz, and singing in holiday choir concerts.

Her grandsons: Jacob, Connor, and Evan brought her immense happiness. She delighted in sleepovers, special treats, and creating memories that made each of them feel cherished. Through it all, she kept her English accent — a signature part of her identity — and embraced life in America while holding tightly to her British heritage. Proper and reserved by nature, she carried herself with quiet grace.

After Malcolm’s passing in February 2020, life changed significantly. Following a fall, she moved to Kalamazoo to live closer to Liz and Steve, where she continued a special friendship with Steve’s mother, Connie Wurtz. She also made several friendships with neighbors and local church. She faced the challenges of rheumatoid arthritis and eventually dementia. A broken hip several months ago led to further decline, and she spent her final months at The Laurels of Galesburg.

Her life was one of quiet devotion to family, to music, and to the traditions she carried across an ocean. Anne will be remembered for her gentle strength, her enduring love, and the beautiful harmony she brought into the lives of those who knew her.

Sadly, Anne Sykes died peacefully on February 22, 2026. Members of her family include her daughter, Elizabeth (Steve) Wurtz; grandchildren: Jacob (Lizzy) Wurtz, Connor Wurtz, and Evan Wurtz; her many cousins in England especially Christopher (Marian) Billings; and her step-son, Peter Sykes. Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Sykes, and her step-daughter, Ruth Sykes.

Cremation has taken place and a private gathering will be held. Visit Anne’s webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com to share stories that reflect the impact Anne had on your life, upload photos, and sign her guestbook.
