Life Story / Obituary

Dorothy Doyle was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 14, 1923, the daughter of James and Margaret (Brandau) Doyle. She was a member of St. Catherine Parish in Detroit at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on July 1, 1941. She received the name Sister Paulette at her reception on January 9, 1942 but returned to the use of her baptismal name in later years. She pronounced first vows on January 9, 1944 and final vows on January 9, 1947.

Sister Dorothy graduated from St. Catherine’s in June, 1941 then attended Nazareth College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Business Education and a minor in Social Studies. She graduated with a Master’s Degree from the University of Detroit in 1966 with a major in Education.

Sister Dorothy began her Ministry in Education at St. Francis Home followed by St. Benedict, St. Margaret Mary and St. Joseph, Lake Orion all in the Detroit area. She taught high school at St. John Vianney in Flint, Michigan and Catholic Central in Muskegon, Michigan before returning to Nazareth College in 1969 as Director of Student Financial Aid. In 1989 Sister Dorothy returned to Muskegon and worked in Social Services at Mercy Hospital for 12 years. Her last ministry before her retirement in 2007 was with the Sisters of St. Joseph Administration as Secretary in the Roseville and Madison Heights offices.

In her retirement years, she shared an apartment with her sister and helped with her care.

Always ready with a smile and a pleasant disposition, Sister Dorothy touched many lives with her kindness. She will be fondly remembered by all those who lived in the Detroit region during her ministry to community. May the care she generously gave to others be returned in the welcome she now experiences in God’s Kingdom.

May She Rest In Peace!
