Life Story / Obituary

Lois Ann Barror was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 14, 1935, the daughter of Elmer and Anna (Uhl) Barror. She was a member of St. James Parish in Ferndale, Michigan at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on July 1, 1953. She received the name Sister Michael Renee at her reception on January 3, 1954, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on January 3, 1956, and final vows on January 3, 1959.

Sister Lois earned a BA Degree from Nazareth College with a major in English. She received her master’s from Notre Dame in Theology-Liturgy. During the first six years of Sister’s ministry, she taught in three elementary schools – St. Gerard in Lansing, Michigan, St. David in Detroit, Michigan and St. John in Davison, Michigan. In 1969 Sister Lois was named Principal at St. Mark School in Warren, Michigan. After acquiring her degree in Liturgy, Sister Lois began her ministry as Pastoral Associate at St. Conrad in Melvindale, Michigan followed by seventeen years at St. Ephrem in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The highlight of her ministry was establishing a brand-new parish in Chesterfield, Michigan – St. Maximilian Kolbe. St. Maximilian eventually merged with St. Francis Parish in Ray, Michigan. In February 2012, Sister retired and moved to Nazareth where she enjoyed volunteering as lector at Borgess Gardens, helping at the switchboard when needed and informing the senior Sisters of the daily events. Sr. Lois moved to the Villa at Borgess Place in 2024 where she continued to be a kind and helpful presence to those she met.

At her Golden Jubilee Sr. Lois quoted Isaiah 64:8 “We are the clay, you are the potter, we are the work of your hand.” Sr. Lois served the People of God at the potter’s request with the support of her loving family, wonderful lifelong friends including Fr. Bob Blondell, her Srs. of St. Joseph and active lay parishioners. May the God whose great love called and gave her opportunities to develop her gifts for the service of others, now grant her life eternal.

May She Rest in Peace!
