Madalyn Higgins, age 94, joyfully went to be with the Lord Friday, December 18, 2020. Madalyn Mary Carney was born in Chicago on September 29, 1926 to James and Lucille Carney. Madalyn had one sister, Patsy. Due to complications of strep throat, Madalyn lost both her sister and father within 9 months of each other. Madalyn spent years of her childhood afraid she would lose her mother too. In 7th grade Madalyn was sent to Villa Angela boarding school as Lucille was no longer able to find employment where her daughter could accompany her. Although she missed her mother, she loved attending Villa Angela.

On March 31, 1951 Madalyn married William Richard Higgins, also of Chicago. Bill and Madalyn moved to St Joseph, Michigan where they raised two daughters, Patricia and Susan. Madalyn worked for Whirlpool Corporation for 30 years with many jobs and responsibilities, ultimately retiring an as an officer of the Whirlpool Foundation.

Bill and Madalyn moved back to the Chicago area in 1985 for their retirement. In 1998 Bill passed away. Madalyn remained in the Chicago area near Patricia until 2013 when she moved into a retirement home near Susan in Michigan. Madalyn was a devout Catholic all her life. She was an avid reader and especially loved history. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and shopping, but her greatest joy was taking her daughters to lunch.

Madalyn is survived by her daughters: Patricia Higgins and Susan (Kim) Swigert; 5 grandchildren: Madalyn (Todd) Tackett, Joshua Sellers, Jonathan (Nicole) Swigert, Michael (Jessica) Swigert, and Jennifer (Mark) Den Herder; 5 great-grandchildren: Cole and Mia Tackett, Joslyn and Grant Den Herder, and Lyla Swigert.

Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Monday (DEC 28) at St. Monica Catholic Church, 4408 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo.
