Lambertus "Bert" Booij

Age 92, died peacefully on April 20, 2019 with his family at his side. Bert was born March 18, 1927, in Emmer-Compascuum, The Netherlands, the son of Aaldert and Antje (Langenberg) Booij. He was the youngest of eight siblings. Bert, his wife Gieny and their son Johnny, along with her family immigrated to Kalamazoo in 1956. A carpenter by trade, he enjoyed many years working at Western Michigan University until his retirement. He made numerous friends there and became a lifelong fan of Bronco Hockey. Bert also knew how to make a deal, often finding antiques or rescued treasures, especially accordions, and turning them around for a few extra dollars. South Haven was his favorite quiet retreat. Proud of the life he lived, Bert was perhaps most proud of his loving family. He was preceded in death by his adoring wife, Gieny and his eight siblings. Surviving are his two children: John (Sandye) Booy, and Bert (Stefanie) Booy; and two granddaughters: Vanessa and Lorna. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Borgess Foundation, the American Heart Association, or a charity of your choice.
