Karolee Bruzeswski, a compassionate, fun-loving, and kind-hearted soul, lived a life brimming with family, friendship, and joy. Her unmatched organizational skills and keen attention to detail shone in every facet of her life - whether at work, playing Mahjong with friends, cheering at a loved one’s milestone, or hosting a heartfelt meal. A cherished sister, aunt, and friend, Karolee’s warmth and generosity will forever resonate with those she held dear.

Born and raised in Bay City, Karolee was the eldest of two children to Eugene P. Bruzewski, a firefighter, Navy veteran, and pre-war local band pianist, and Virginia Duchane, a gifted artist known for her paintings and ceramics. Her parents instilled in her a deep faith that guided her life, while nurturing her love for creating flaky-crusted apple pies and appreciating the arts. They also fueled her adventurous spirit through camping trips to Canada’s remote wilderness, far from civilization’s reach.

After graduating from Bay City St. James High School in 1960, Karolee earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University. She began her career at Beaumont Hospital in Detroit, later joining Park Davis (Warner-Lambert) Pharmaceutical. In 1978, to be closer to her brother, sister-in-law, and newborn nephew, she moved to West Michigan where she thrived at the Upjohn Company. As an FDA Liaison Specialist, she leveraged her regulatory expertise, earning the prestigious Upjohn Award - the company’s highest honor.

Though Karolee never married or had children, her family was her heart. She was a devoted aunt, deeply involved in her nephews’ lives, treating them to beach outings, movies, pizza, and their favorite shoes. She babysat often, engaging them in games, puzzles, and chores to build life skills, always their biggest supporter through triumphs and trials.

A talented cook, Karolee delighted in hosting family and friends, with her Thanksgiving dinners a beloved tradition. Her home was a haven of warmth and connection.

Karolee’s friendships, forged in high school and college, endured across decades and distances. She and her closest friends made time to reunite, their bonds as strong as ever.

A woman of many passions, Karolee found joy in quilting, sewing, crocheting, and crafting. She tended her garden with care, delighted in antiquing, and embraced travel, with cherished trips to Europe, Mexico, and across the U.S. Her walking tour through southern France was a particular highlight. Her love extended to her many cats, and most recently her cat Rusty, whom she treated like family, ensuring they lived pampered, joyful lives as her loyal companions.

Karolee’s spirited exclamation, “Oh, for God’s sake,” in the face of life’s challenges will echo fondly in the hearts of those who knew her best.

As we gather to honor Karolee’s life, let us find solace in our cherished memories and carry her legacy forward. By gathering with loved ones, savoring a cat’s companionship, enjoying a glass of wine or beer, spending a day by the lake, sharing laughter, listening with empathy, or facing challenges with resilience, we keep Karolee’s vibrant spirit alive, inspiring others as she inspired us.

Karolee Bruzewski, 82, of Kalamazoo, passed away on May 16, 2025. She is survived by her brother, Richard (Gail) Birch; nephews Elliot (Julia) Birch and Evan Birch; great-niece and nephew, Cara and Jack Birch; and many cousins.

Please join us at a Life Story Service on Saturday, May 31, at 4 PM at Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, 6080 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo (269) 375-2900. A reception will follow in the Life Story Center, where food, drinks, and stories will be shared. Celebrate Karolee's life online by sharing your favorite stories and photos on her dedicated webpage at BetzlerLifeStory.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Kalamazoo Humane Society, SPCA of Southwest Michigan, Salvation Army, or the Red Cross.
